"I knew if I could show them the light, they could succeed." Tina Patel, Founder and Director of Montessori ONE Preschool and Elementary Academies, has spent the last two decades focusing on helping children succeed academically and personally. She has worked with a wide range of students, from at-risk youth to children from privileged families, ranging from ages 15 months to 18 years. What she has discovered from her experience is that the key to success for all of them has been a Love of Learning. Regardless of age, gender, nationality, or socioeconomic background, the missing component for struggling students was the Love of Learning.
While a graduate student at the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning, Ms. Patel worked with Dr. Anne Taylor in researching learning environments and their effects on children. In her studies, she questioned what would happen if clutter and distractions found in most public school classrooms was removed. Her research led her to the Montessori philosophy of the “Prepared Environment”.
After graduating from UNM, Ms. Patel worked with a variety of programs including at-risk students of all ages, students who dropped out of high school, post-secondary students, and educators nationwide. From 1999 to 2003, Ms. Patel served as Vice President of the Rio Grande Educational Collaborative, where she founded and directed a re-engagement program. This highly successful program prevented 450 students from dropping out of high school and equipped them for further study.
Throughout these experiences, Ms. Patel continued to contemplate and understand how she could help children develop a Love of Learning that would remain with them throughout their life. With extensive research and passion, she ultimately found Montessori ONE.
Montessori ONE Preschool Academy was born in 2007 with a vision to instill a lifelong love of learning, independence and the desire to succeed in children. Ms. Patel, aligned the school with Association Montessori International (AMI). AMI teacher training is stringent and comprehensive and its program follows an authentic Montessori approach to learning. Montessori ONE Preschool & Elementary Academies are the only AMI-Recognized schools in Albuquerque.
As students began graduating to first grade from Montessori ONE Preschool Academy, countless parents asked Ms. Patel to expand to the Elementary level. They desired for their children to experience the academic and personal success similar to the preschool. Research on various Elementary programs in Albuquerque convinced Tina of the strong need for an Elementary school that serves students who excel academically. And so with the same preparation, planning and passion, the Montessori ONE Elementary Academy broke ground in the summer of 2015. The Elementary Academy serves grades 1 through 6.
Ms. Patel and the Montessori ONE staff are excited to continue to expand Montessori ONE’s vision through providing the Albuquerque community with another quality learning environment! If you are looking for a top quality private school education for your child in the Albuquerque area, Montessori ONE must be on your list to investigate.
