What is the Montessori Method?
As an internationally-recognized learning discipline, the Montessori Method is a holistic approach to education whereby the whole child’s needs and interests are considered and equally valued. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, children learn through experience encouraging a deeper and more consistent understanding of language, mathematics, science, music, social interactions, and much more. Studies are approached in manner referred to as “Cosmic Education” whereby separate subjects are considered inter-relationally. The Montessori Method employs the use of Montessori “materials” designed to demonstrate abstract concepts in a digestible and concrete way. Here, children are viewed as dynamic learners, full of creative potential and in need of independence to develop into joyful learners. Montessori students are often recognized for their maturity, confidence, independence, compassion, curiosity, problem-solving, and above-grade level performance.
Nido Program
The Nido is New Mexico’s first authentic Montessori infant learning environment. Serving infants six weeks through walking, the Nido (pronounced nee-doe) replicates a beautiful, light-filled, and nurturing home environment. More than a traditional day care, the Nido program is designed to foster freedom of movement, gross motor skills, fine motor development, early socialization, and language development. As children mature under the guidance of our Montessori trained care-givers, they develop the confidence, curiosity, and early skills that will become the foundation for their educational journey.
Preschool Program
Montessori ONE Academy’s Preschool Program serves children from walking through six years. The primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach their full potential in all areas of life: cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. The calm, child-centered learning environment places an emphasis on organization and personal responsibility. Children are encouraged to take care of their own belongings and personal needs, such as zipping up their own coats, putting away materials, and choosing their next “Work”. Children are provided with a progressive curriculum that relies on a combination of teacher guidance and child-directed learning. The curriculum takes an integrated, thematic approach that ties the separate disciplines together into studies of the physical universe, the world of nature, and the human experience. With hands-on materials, students begin to develop an understanding of abstract intellectual concepts in a concrete manner while further developing their confidence, independence, curiosity, and creativity.
Elementary Program
The Elementary Program at Montessori ONE Academy serves students six through twelve years. The primary goal of a Montessori program is to help each child reach his or her full potential in all areas of life. The nature of engagement at a Montessori school promotes the development of cognitive preparation, social skills, emotional maturity, and physical coordination. The classroom and surrounding areas are specially designed to foster independence and engagement and are referred to as the Prepared Environment. Montessori ONE Academy provides a robust elementary curriculum referred to as “Cosmic Education” whereby lessons are designed to arouse interest across multiple disciplines and incorporate multiple subject areas to demonstrate how the world and all subject matter are inter- connected. Students are dynamic participants in their learning journey. Their preferences, ideas, likes, dislikes, strengths, and challenges are all considered and valued as they work with the Guides.
Our Facility
After years of careful observation, Dr. Maria Montessori determined that when the learning environment is designed in such a way as to facilitate independent learning and ease of exploration, children learn at a more rapid pace with greater enthusiasm, curiosity, and a deeper mastery of subject matter. The Prepared Environment at Montessori ONE Academy includes light-filled classrooms, child-sized furniture, an open modular floor plan, and Montessori materials that are organized and easily accessible to students.
